WJ Group offers extensive experience in both pumping tests for groundwater investigations and thermal response tests to determine thermal properties for closed-loop ground source energy systems.
At WJ we provide vital testing services that help ensure the success of your groundwater or ground source energy projects. These tests not only capture critical data for licensing and system design, they also feed into our advanced modelling and optimisation techniques, ensuring that every system is tailored to your site’s specific conditions.
These tests are essential for assessing hydrogeological conditions and often required for obtaining abstraction licenses. Traditional pumping tests are undertaken using a single pumped well and appropriate piezometer array. Test pumping and pilot trials may involve working on a small group of wells, ejector wells or wellpoint systems.
These tests are used to determine the thermal properties of the ground. They provide critical data for designing cost-effective closed-loop ground source systems. A small portable test rig injects heat energy into a closed loop test borehole, measuring incoming and outgoing temperatures of the heat transfer fluid, the flow rate of the fluid and the heat energy input.
As co-authors of the CIRIA C750 Groundwater Control guidelines, WJ combines technical rigour with practical insight. We use a range of design and optimisation techniques to ensure each system performs efficiently and reliably. We work with leading software including MODFLOW, SEEP/W and Aquifer Win32 to ensure each design is built on robust, industry-recognised modelling platforms.

Together, these approaches allow us to adapt intelligently to ground conditions, reduce operating costs, and deliver dewatering solutions that work first time.
In support of testing, WJ also provides:
With decades of experience undertaking tests globally from swamps in Nigeria to nuclear facilities in Scotland, WJ Group ensures all tests are carried out to the highest possible standards, whether for groundwater investigations or thermal system feasibility. Our comprehensive service includes test design, installation and data analysis, with results feeding directly into advanced modelling and optimisation techniques. Insights are delivered through AGS-format data, Excel outputs or graphical dashboards, supporting fast and informed decision-making.
